RASP 2023 Rapier Lesson - Kevin and Brad
This is a demonstration lesson given at RASP 2023 with Maestro Kevin Murakoshi teaching Instructor Brad Cramer. Kevin was asked to teach the same lesson that participants had just worked through in a group as an individual lesson with an emphasis on dynamic movements and non-verbal cues. This was intended to be contrasted against the same lesson that Maestro Charles Dobbs gave focusing on giving verbal commands and emphasizing technical execution.

Transcript: In this video we are going to talk about the rapier, how to hold the rapier, and the hand positions. So, first off, we’ll take a look at the rapier. As you can see, the rapier is divided into two parts. You have the guard and the blade. The blade consists of the point and true edge, which is on the same side of the knuckle guard, the false edge, and the ricasso. It’s this little part of the blade that comes back into the guard. You’ll put your finger and your thumb on this and feel the sensations along the blade. Now this guard is a fairly complex guard. You can see there’s some extra hand protection here. At its core, it consists of these elements: the grip, the pommel, and the quillions. If we see the blade being held, you can see it’s like a handshake. Your grip is light and relaxed. Your thumb is on one side and your finger is on the other side. So, now lets take a look at the hand positions. So, if David stands as if he’s going to draw his sword from his scabbard, he can show you the primary hand positions and the secondary hand positions. This is the first hand position. It’s called first hand position. It’s a primary position, and you can see that the quillions go straight up and down. If he were to rotate until the quillions were flat, he would be in second hand position. If he were to keep rotating until they are up and down again, he would be in third hand position. Finally, when the quillions are flat and his palm is up, this is fourth hand position. Those are the primary hand positions. We also make a lot of use of secondary hand positions. The half-way-in-between ones. There’s third-in-fourth - a way for David to align his true edge against the other person’s blade. And second-in-third, which is halfway between second and third. You also have the intermediate or secondary position of first-in-second where the true edge is pointing up and to the outside. Those are the primary and second hand positions, how to hold the rapier, and the parts of the rapier.

My fencing instructor (MSU Bozeman MT, 1985) disarmed me by hitting my foil blade and wrapping it and then flinging it out of my hand where it fell clear across the basketball-court & the guard rang like a bell on the free-throw line. He used the flexibility of his blade like it was Jackie Chan. Watching my sword go flying was worth the student loans.

Great stuff gents! I have not read that text, but these lessons seems to cover a lot more cutting actions than other rapier manuals from early or mid 1600's. Some of the actions remind me of later dueling/classical sabre.

Practice makes good and good practice makes perfect. These moves seem to be purely for establishing habits in combat that you can rely on. However, when your opponent is just standing there, waiting to be run through, it's difficult to grasp how these things actually work. Evenly paired, your opponent will defend in any way he or she can and you'll have to recover and deal with that. You-tube is great for spurring on interest but, at some point, you need to pick up a sword and start practicing I guess. Time to start shopping.

Hahaha what a pointless exercise, we all know rapier's can't cut. They should know the only sword made to cut ever was the katana , all other swords tried to copy this a failed , so trying to cut with anything other then a katana is pointless. Here I thought u guys where the experts Geez Louise.

One comment regarding fencer from the left side. His sword is to far from right fencer when he does cuts. In such situation there is no need to do the guards because cut doesn't make sence. So in general distance need to be shorter when doing cuts.
